Frequently Asked QuestionsHow does reflexology work? The principles of reflexology are that many different reflex zones are mapped out on your feet and hands. These correspond to each organ or gland within your body. Using special techniques, a reflexologist massages these reflex points and this may help to: What will happen during a treatment? A reflexology treatment will be carried out on bare feet and will take place while you relax on a couch or reclining chair. Most people find the sensation pleasant and soothing, though occasionally some discomfort may be felt. This could indicate an imbalance in a corresponding part of the body and will ease as the session progresses. After the treatment you should feel comfortably relaxed and calm. Is it safe to have reflexology treatments while I am pregnant? Yes, but only if your reflexologist has been fully trained in the specialised maternity techniques required. Certain areas on the feet need to be avoided during pregnancy and you should ensure that you choose a practitioner who has undergone proper training and has experience of working with the conditions of pregnancy. ![]() How soon after a reflexology treatment will I notice an improvement in my symptoms? This really varies from person to person. You should feel very calm and relaxed after your initial treatment and many patients report that any digestive discomfort they may have been experiencing has eased very quickly. Most say that they have slept noticeably better since having the treatment. Some notice an improvement in their energy levels which can last a couple of days or more. As a general rule the longer a medical condition has been present, the longer it will take to respond. How many treatments will I need? Initially I suggest that you have two treatments quite close together (usually no more than two weeks apart) so that I can get feedback and monitor carefully the effect the first treatment has had. This allows your body to get used to the treatment and gives a kick-start to the healing process. Follow-up weekly or fortnightly treatments would be most beneficial, if finances allow. Most patients will require a treatment plan of 4-6 sessions, before moving on to a maintenance programme (perhaps monthly sessions) to keep them in optimum health. As mentioned previously, some long-term health issues will require an ongoing course of more frequent sessions and this depends on how your body responds. For fertility issues, reflexology treatments will need to be carried out at different times during your menstrual cycle to allow hormone balancing to take place and optimise your chances of a successful outcome. This will be explained fully at your initial appointment. I can't bear the thought of having my feet touched. Does reflexology tickle? This is something that many people worry about and usually stems from a member of their family tickling their feet during childhood! The pressure used during a treatment will be gentle but firm and should not tickle even the most sensitive feet. ![]() |
